First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page: “For Bob Filberg - Come and see us soon / Hawaii’s not all that good - / Rod. Haig-Brown.” A very good to near fine copy in like dust jacket. A little toning to the pastedowns and some foxing to the top edge of the text block, not affecting the contents. Slight toning to the spine of the jacket, as well as a tiny closed tear at the bottom of the rear panel. A very nice example overall. The true first Canadian edition of this essential guide, described as the “best basic introduction to fly-fishing,” (Nick Lyons) by the “greatest writer on angling since an old chap called Izaak Walton.” (Gregory Clark) Scarce inscribed, particularly with significant association.  Robert Filberg was a logging industrialist and philanthropist, whose home and property would become a municipal park in British Columbia.  It was in British Columbia that Haig-Brown began his career as a logger, fisherman, and angling guide. He would go on to become an accomplished conservationist and writer, publishing over twenty books and numerous essays on the subject of fly-fishing and the natural world.
