New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1929

First edition. First printing, without the legal disclaimer on page x. In the unclipped, first issue dust jacket, with ‘Katharine Barclay’ on the front flap. A near fine copy in a very good dust jacket. A slight lean to the spine. Only three pages creased at a corner. A faint smudge to pp. 281, but the contents otherwise fine. None of the offsetting that is commonly found on on the pastedowns. Some toning to the dust jacket and minor chipping at the extremities. Remnant of a single tape reinforcement at the verso, behind the crown of the spine. Still, a most impressive unrestored example. One of the greatest novels out of the First World War, inspired by Hemingway’s own service as an ambulance driver on the Italian front. Published within a month of the stock market crash, A Farewell to Arms nevertheless experienced fantastic sales, and its critical acclaim sealed Hemingway’s reputation as one of the most important writers of his generation.
